Why I Am Thankful For Social Media & The Community It Gave Me


Yes, it is that time of year. When you sit around the dinner table with your friends and family. A warm fire is burning inside. The nip is in the air. Your just enjoying the moment and sipping some warm apple cider.


I live in California. Its more like this. I am sitting around the table. The  air conditioning is on, I am in shorts. I just finished  a Corona ( I like mine with lime).  Football is on and whatever team I want to win is losing.

So now that the Hallmark moment is over, let me tell you why I am thankful for Social Media and the Community it gave me. I will do this in list form, as people like lists.

-. I now have thousands of people I can reach out to when I need something. Take this blog post. I had total writers block today. I reached out and Colby Gergen said ” How about why you are thankful for social media? I think it’s that time of year…” and here you go!

-I learn something new everyday about the world. The amount of information and knowledge I get is just off the hook.  I know anything I need is out there for me to find. Wanna learn about lepercons ? The information is out there. Wanna learn about marketing? Its out there. I can find that information. BUT with  that being said, I am learning about things I am not looking to learn about.  Huh? I now know where random small cities are, cause people in my community live there. I learn about things like science, art and plants. All because people share this in my network.

-Need to raise money for a friend in need like Liz Strauss? Create a fund and people will help like they did for the The Get Well Liz Strauss Fund

Then there are the simple things I am thankful to my community for  like:

-The way I can travel to a city, get lost and ask for help via a social networking site. Within minutes I will have 50 replies with directions, information or even a phone number to call for directions. Plus someone in my community more then likely lives there.

-When I type up a blog post and need someone to review it, I post the link and get instant criticism and corrections. Keeping in mind I only asked for spelling help 🙂

-When I want to kill some time, bored waiting at the dentist, there is an unlimited number of people to chat with.

-Telling me what movie to see when I cant decide.

-I want something different for dinner and I need a recipe, they are there

-I just want a good laugh.. they can give me one.

-I have something bugging me and want to vent. They are there for me.

-I have an urgent message I want to pass on or breaking news. They pass it on for me.

The list can go on and on. So I ask you this, my community.

Here a Twitter. There a Twitter. Everywhere a Twitter. It is like you can not avoid the the tweets posted by those who tweeters. . I mean some may have tweetaholism and become tweetaholics.  Im not going to be tweepish about this, nor should you when you the tweeple who twead this.  Twitter is not for the the tweepish nor a place for tweerboxes. So let me tweet-back to my point.

Well I think you get might point, Twitter is everywhere and being used by everyone. Let me give you a rundown of observations I have made just in the last 24 hours. I will do it in list form, cause people like lists.

-I watched a Desperate Housewives episode on Hulu and Tom Scavo could not get a job cause he did not know what Twitter was.

-There was a post by Domino’s Pizza asking how they can get their brand name on Twitter as someone else has both Domino’s and Dominospizza i.e squatters.

-There is @nakedpizza who uses Twitter to bring in 15% of its daily business according to an Adage article titled “Twitter Proves Its Worth as a Killer App for Local Businesses

-Rumors are that Google will now index Twitter

-There was even a NCAA Recruiting Violation on Twitter!

-Starbucks is going to start marketing on Twitter

-Oh and Patrick Swayze is not dead, no matter what tweeps on Twitter say

So my point. Twitter is big. Its getting bigger everyday.  Then there is this post from today: Social Media Fails To Manifest As Marketing Medium, Report Likens Twitter To TiVo: More Hype Than Reality Ill give you the take away from the article which is:

“Social media has reached critical mass, with 83% of the Internet population now using it – and more than half doing so on a regular basis – according to new research being released today by Knowledge Networks. But for all the media industry’s hype and buzz surrounding social networks, microblogs, and other social networking platforms, the genre has failed to become much of a marketing medium, and in the opinion of the Knowledge Networks’ analysts, likely never will”

Nor am I saying this because I have the Peninsula Twitter and Facebook Meet-up for June 2009, that I have put together happening at the Four Season in Silicon Valley. (what another plug?)

Look people are watching less tv. If they are they have DVR’s to go past the commercials. There are mp3 players, satiellte radio and sites like Ilike.com that are replacing radio. Newspapers are dying when you can get your news online.

Look, maybe something better will come down the pipe that will blow social media out of the water. Sure, but it is not going away anytime soon.

Yep..its another one.  Hey, it has been about a month since the last one. Just so much to share and too little time to do it.  So you get it all in one nice post! So here is information  and self promotion with links to things I want to share,people to thank  or think you may find of interest. – Starting  today I am “test driving” the 2009 Ford Flex. I get to use the car until next week. Let it be known, I am so not a car guy. I know nothing about them. What I am is a gadget guy. The built in media center brings me to tears, its amazing. Get this, its all voice activated.  Ill need to take some pics of that and post. Here is a short video and a pic:


-On April 23rd I organized the Peninsula Twitter and Facebook Meetup.  It went really well. There were roughly 115 people who came throughout the night! Here is some video. I will be putting together some sort of event page shortly for future meetups.

The Community 2.0 Conference is May 11-13, 2009 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Myself,  Connie Bensen and Kellie Parker will be leading an all day workshop called “Getting Started with Community” on May 11.

-Facebook, I know between that and twitter my posts are covered with links about them.  Facebook is growing like mad and its getting a little crazy in there. -How popular is the use of social media?  The FDA is using it to let people know about the Peanut Butter recall. Yes, they are on Twitter, Facebook, and more!


-Okay we know social media is popular. How do we measure success? That is a question that many people ask and have different measurements of. I think Mitch Wagner did a nice summary of it in his post How Do You Measure Success On Social Media?

5 Weeks down for 2009 and 47 weeks to go! Amazing! Its been a busy week in social media. Let me share with you some of the items I find interesting or worth passing on!

#5… you get the idea, I’m referring to the 25 Random Things Chain letter that is just rocking Facebook right now.  How big is it? Huge! Get this… per Facebook they state that:

  • The number of total Facebook Notes created per day has increased over 100% in the last week
  • The number of people tagged in Facebook Notes per day has increased 5x in the last week

Social Media is only getting bigger! More and more companies are getting on board and using it have an online presence to interact with clients, build their brand and well increase sales. In short, everyone is doing it. Do not believe me? Just take a list of the Top 100 Social Brands of 2008. Oh and the top 10 are:

-Virtual Worlds, something close to my heart and it seems Disney as well. Disney will be investing more money into them and believes they are close to being profitable.

Okay, couple random things  I just wanted to share.

First, check out this video from 1981. It is a segment done by San Francisco station KRON about newspapers going on the web. It is worth the 2:17 to watch it. As they mention the crazy cost , how its experiment, and it takes over 2 hours to get the whole newspaper.

“What would be your best advice for someone brand new to social media?”

The response was huge! So here in no particular order are some of the many responses I got!

Gianluigi Cuccureddu, Web Marketing Strategist & Tactician: “Start listening and learning right now.Social Media/participatory marketing is here to stay, start researching how your target audience behaves and how it can help your business to achieve objectives. Start now because these insights aren’t created overnight, it takes time, patience and efforts to learn.”

Roxanne Weber, Principal , Dimension Solutions: “I’ve told business clients in the past to just start out slow. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your social network.
Start with one major social media effort (such as Facebook and/or Twitter), then build that up as best you can. Then move on to the next site; ideally you’ll be able to hook all these sites into one (although this is impossible to do 100%). Lastly, don’t expect connections to come to you – most people with 500+ Twitter followers get them by following others first, or joining groups designed for follow-sharing. In the digital world it is NOT true that “if you build it, they will come”. Like the real world, you have to actively work at building your network following.”

Jennifer Hoffmann, Manager, Customer Engagement for Dow Jones & Company: “Lots of great answers here! If your aim is to specifically build a community around issues relevant to your customers, listen first to what is being said and explore different forums that your customers participate in. Some interesting areas might emerge that you hadn’t considered before. In a funny example, my husband recently became a fan of “bacon” on Facebook. There is an entire fan page devoted to plain old bacon, the pork product. Now wouldn’t it be brilliant if that page were run by Oscar Meyer or Hormel? Unfortunately, I don’t think it is. Simply creating a group doesn’t mean all your customers and prospects will flock to it – start by adding value to other groups and build your network, then ask people to join your party.”

Scott Halstead, Manager, Event Marketing at The Boston Globe:”My best advise is not to be a talker, but respond to the hard work that people put in to pulling information and providing good content. Twitter has attracted some very smart people and given them the opportunity to share ideas, but the best people also comment on other peoples good ideas.”

This, of course got the hamster wheels in my head turning.  What are some social media tools that a brand can use to market their goods? Let us see, we have Twitter, Facebook… Then it hit me. There is a lot of ways to market your brand online, OTHER than Facebook and Twitter.  So let us look at some ways a company can market their selves online.  I think a good way to answer this would be in list form, as people like lists.


Social Networking Sites: Do not just think Facebook & Myspace!   Is that where your potential clients are? Maybe. Yet, there a lot more! Are you looking for Baby Boomers specifically? There is Eons, Boomj, Teebeedee and many more.   There are social networking sites done by other companies that you can partner with. Heck the WWE even has a site. There is probably a niche social networking site for almost any target demographic you can think of.


Virtual Worlds: As I posted last week, there is $600 million being dropped into virtual worlds. Creating a virtual version of your product seems like a great move. Find a virtual world, there are  hundreds (this is list is far from complete or current, but it is a start!) and make your brand something special there! Why not allow an avatar drink a virtual coke? Let an avatar wear designer jeans?


Create a Blog: This blog could be about things that “support” the product you want to sell.  Let us say you sell diamond rings. Create a blog that shares information about different quality, shape, type, ratings about diamond rings. Best time to buy, events to buy, fun ways to surprise people with them.  This blog can help support the goal of sales and give potential clients great reasons to purchase the diamond rings.  You can also do something fun like SouthWest Airlines.

YouTube Channel: Same Idea as the blog, just done with video. A great example is the New York Times channel. The great thing about this it has links to channels for the reports and links back to the New York Times site. In a way it feels like your actually on the New York Times site itself.

nike-logoMobile Application: This is hot, I mean red hot. The mobile application business is booming. Why not create an application that supports your brand in some way? Look at what Nike did!  My advice, make it fun and simple. Let people take your brand with them.  Oh and if you are an application developer, there is some serious money to be made as Newsweek points out.

5 Successful Traits Of An Online Community


So, I was thinking this morning, I know scary. Okay, enough with your jokes.  I was thinking about  online communities  and how powerful they are.  In this ever changing world of technology and social media they are becoming more and more powerful. I truly believe companies need to start embracing them more than ever.  As I have mentioned before Barack Obama built his own online community to get his message out, which became a key to his win.

What is an online community?

Glad you asked.

I define it as:

– A group of people that mostly interact with each other via some form of online communication. This can be anything such as a social networking site, newsletters, virtual worlds  online video, online audio, instant messaging or a combination of those.

When a company or person puts out a blog, Facebook application, online video or online profile, they need to build an online community around it. This community becomes they way to build buzz and an online brand. All which help get the message out.  What are the traits and keys that make it successful? Glad you asked!  Let’s take a look at a few. Why don’t we do it in list form? People like lists!

–  There is an Online Community Manager. The short version of what a Community Manager does is keeps an eye on what is going on in the community. This person keeps it clean and safe for all. As well as helping users with problems, moderating the site, starting and ending conversations. I will get into a lot more detail in a future post. Needless to say this person should be worth their weight in gold.

-The members of the community all have something in common. What it is maybe very hard to say. Yet, they are all part of this community because they have a common interest in the subject matter at some level. It could be as simple as a model train building  club,  people who eat Angry Burgers.. there I go again, (sorry) to college professors sharing information. The possibilities are endless.

– These members need to be made up of some who know a lot more on the subject then you do. As well as members who know a lot less then you do.  This allows the flow of information as well as great conversation back and forth. If people are not getting something out of it, it won’t work.

-Members must be made to feel comfortable in the community, as well with the technology they are using within the community. This can be done with ease of communication (whatever the platform may be) as well as a good Community Manager.

-Make sure people are having a good time. Basic I know, but I have seen it get lost in the development. If members are not having fun, it won’t work.
