What The Heck Is Social Media?

What The Heck Is Social Media?

Social Media Bandwagon

The question seems simple right? What is Social Media.. well that is easy.  The definition of Social Media per Wikipedia  is:

“Social Media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media supports the human need for social interaction, using Internet- and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers. Some  define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content.

Makes sense right?

Ya right! That was a mouth full. I do not know about you but I find the above way to deep and complicated. So I reached out to my community and asked them how they would define the term Social Media.  I got lots of amazing answers some longer then the wikipedia version, others shorter. .  I thought it would be fun to  provide you some of them in list form, because well people like lists.

I asked: “What exactly is Social Media?” and “How Would You Define Social Media To Someone in 140 characters or less?”

-Susan Crawford, Internet Strategist : “Although you may be hearing a lot of buzz words like Twitter, Flutter, WordPress, or Facebook, “social media” refers to the plethora of ways you can network online — around blogs, member boards, social causes, kindred spirits (such as sports clubs), issues/editorials, and reviews. You can add your opinion, offer your perspective, clarify a question, share your experience, propose proven solution, lend credibility, or just sympathize wherever people congregate. Just jump in. Listen first. Get a feel for that specific community then join in – frequently. Be conversation (postings of purely headlines are not well tolerated).

The next thing you’re are probably hearing is about the ‘social media time suck.’ This refers to the time it takes to write fresh and relevant postings in all your social media places. Time suck is at its worst if you don’t have an intentional social media strategy. You may want to consider Posterous or Ping which are services that can place one posting across all your social accounts simultaneously. “It is better to be a part of social media than apart from social media.”

-Apeksha Bobe, Marcom Professionals :  “Social media is all about increasing your touch points with ‘potential’ consumers. It is creating a ripple effect that boosts brand recognition.
For example, a company Facebook page can be shared among thousands of friends. Those friends can share with their friends, increasing brand awareness for the company.
Its also about increasing your visibility. Aside from appearing cool and innovative, engaging in social media builds trust with consumers. ” It is a NECESSITY today.

-Keith Burtis, Keith Burtis Consulting: “Social Media in my opinion is a white board, a blank slate where companies and individuals have the ability to use a myriad of tools including audio, video, and text to effectively communicate, engage, educate, market, and share ideas in a way that is strategically advantageous to the objective of that business, brand or individual.”

-Meez/Swaggerdap.com: “Social media is interactive content.”

-Brigitte Goddemeyer:” Getting authentic transparent messages to a world’s transparent audience”

-Sonia Carreno, Passage Communications: “Online channels for self-promotion and connectivity + ability to sort “friends” and speak to them according to sort structure.”

-Jonathan Silverman, GSA Business Development: “On a business level, it is a ‘new’ (perhaps not so new as each day passes) form of communication that will grow in importance as it gains ever more traction. It will become the primary and most intimate means of business to business and business to consumer communication. It is already forcing marketers to re-evaluate the way brands interact with their customer audiences and potential customers. On a personal level it offers means to connect and reconnect, to play, to belong and to network.”

-Annie Sorensen, : “Easy answer…Contributing & Caring.”

A Conference Worth Going To!

“Expert”.. it is a term I can not stand.  Me, I learn something new everyday. I never claim to know it all. Heck, my wife will back me up on that. I am always talking to people, reading, watching and learning to keep up with all this new technology.

One way I do this is by going to conferences and one I am a fan of is the Web 2.0 Expo.

I know that in these tough economic times we are watching every dime, but I dig this conference. Yes, I said dig.

Let me tell you why in list form, as people like lists.

- As far as cost goes for something on this level, there are many different pricing options

- There are software companies, strategists, executives, mobile technology companies, leaders in web 2.0 industry right there for you to chat with. (they don’t bite either)

-Networking, Networking, Networking. I have made many long lasting relationships at events like this.

- This conference has great speakers like: Stowe Boyd , Maggie Fox, Christine Herron, Tara Hunt and Charlene Li plus lots more!

-Notice the speakers are from many different areas of Web 2.0/Social Media/New Media/ insert buzz term here

- Many different tracks to pick from like Mobile, Web, Marketing and Security

-Workshops

-The Expo floor, the best part of any conference where all the action is!

Okay that is my soapbox moment for now.. sorry.

I Was A 26 Year Old Blond Bombshell..On The Internet Part 1

I Was A 26 Year Old Blond Bombshell..On The Internet Part 1

(This is the crazy story on how I got involved in Social Media. It is too long to tell in great detail, but here are the key points to the history. If you are totally confused, check out the video below.)

It is true. Are you done laughing? Yes, I a 38 year old married father of 5, used to pretend to be a 26 year old bombshell on the ‘net. Want to  know the best part? It worked really well for networking and building my brand. Yep.  I would do my social networking under the name: Britney Mason. Here meet Britney-

Britney Mason

Britney Mason

Yep, she.. I mean I was a female avatar.

So at this point your totally confused, I know. Let me just tell you the story from the beginning, as I can best recall it.

In August 2005, I was up with my new born twins around 1:00 a.m. Doing my part so my beautiful wife could catch a few winks. I was reading TIME magazine learning about this new virtual world called, Second Life. (I’m not going to get into all the details of SL in this post, you can read more about it here.)

The first thing I was asked to do was pick a last name from a list and create my own first name.  As I looked down the list, the only semi-normal last name I could find was, Mason. As for a a first name, I had US magazine next to me with Britney Spears on the cover.  At that moment it all came together for me, Im going to pretend to be a girl in SL.

(Weird? Yep! Odd? For sure! Do you want to make all kinds of jokes at my expense right now? Yes, you do.  Done? Great)

Now I spent about 3 months in SL trying to figure out what the point was, what I needed to do to have fun, etc, etc. In the end, I got bored. I found really nothing interesting to do there.

Fast Forward to early 2006, I had been listening to Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code podcast since 2005. On one show Adam had mentioned his discovery of Second Life and how he was so excited about this new way to meet and interact with people. He went so far as to invite people to meet him in world, giving out his Avatar name of  “Adam Neumann”.

currycastle

I thought to myself, why not log in and meet Adam Curry. Well that is exactly what I did.  Adam quickly responded to me, going so far as to invite me to his home. Over the next few days I would meet Adam “In World” and help him build out his avatar, Curry Castle and share tips and tricks. Now, Adam asked me point blank if I was really a woman.  I immediately  replied “Yes, of course!”

At the time Adam’s podcast was truly daily, so everyday he would mention something about SL, what we were up doing, who else was in SL.  As, we spent more time in SL and he updated listeners on his podcast, something interesting started to happen.  A community started to form around us.  I would get Instant Messages from people looking for Adam, or just wanting to chat. It was really exciting.

Then Adam approached me about a Second Life deal. What if we partnered up for a “Virtual Business”? A 50-50 deal.  He would fund it and I would run it. SL was just starting to grow by leaps and bounds, Real Life companies were starting to come in like Home Depot, Sears, IBM, and others. I was all in!

Now, a few other things were happening at this time. All sorts of Podcasters and also joined SL. They all would hang out at Curry Castle or maybe at a piece of virtual land they purchased nearby. There was Cali Lewis, Anji Bee, The Rumor Girls,  among many, many others. They in turn would go and talk about their experiences on their  respective podcasts.  The number of people joining the community just grew and grew because of this.

Seeing that we needed something more organized, I spoke to Adam, who agreed, it was time to purchase our own virtual island, PodShow Island. Podshow was Adam’s company which would later be called Mevio.

PodShow Island, in my opinion was a success when it launched. The sim was nothing but hustle and bustle.  Eventually many of us lost interest and moved on to Twitter. The island closed in March 2008

Yes, I have missed a lot of the details. Think of this as the cliff notes version if you will. So, please do not nit pick.   I wanted to give you this history so I can refrence it in future blog posts, when I discuss communities, networking and online branding. Oh, its also fun to go reminisce of where it all started for me!

Oh, so for those of you who are totally confused and wondering what is the point, check out the video below.

I think this video I did for CNBC somes it up really well.  Questions? Feel free to ask!

The Angry Burger Or Burger King Gets Social Media!

The Angry Burger Or Burger King Gets Social Media!

burger-king-homer

So there are a few things going on that have led to my obsession with Burger Kings “Angry Burger”. In list form, cause people like lists they are:

-I started my DIEt today and obsessed with food already (yes that DIE with a t at the end)

- I like to joke about what could be the worst thing to eat.

-Burger King has created the Angry Burger which is  “Angry Onions, Jalapenos, Pepper Jack Cheese, and an angry sauce

angry

- Then there is the Whopper Sacrifice Application for Facebook:

whopper-sacrifice-picture

You un-friend 10 friends o Facebook and get a coupon for a free Whopper.  One thing to keep in mind here is that when you normally un-friend people, they do not get a notice or a status update. When you un-friend them with the Sacrifice application they do get a notice as well they are set ablaze.  Of course by doing that it helps the application get a “viral push” within Facebook.  I got to say, I just love the marketing going on here.

The whole un-friend thing as something to it. I got to say Burger King really has something pretty cool going on here. They always seem to be right in the New Media mix, remember Subservientchicken? Another great online move. As well as Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy on Youtube:

seth

Bottom line here: Burger King gets New Media, Social Media, Word Of Mouth Marketing, the whole thing.

The First Post Is Always The Hardest

The First Post Is Always The Hardest

The first time is always the hardest. I have been going back and forth about what this post should be about. Should I just dive right into talking about New Media or  Social Media? Heck isn’t it all under the same umbrella? Maybe I should start with who I am and what my background is? Nah, that’s all on the About Dave page.  Oh I know I can roll out a huge big post about something cutting edge and exciting in the space! No, its a slow week everyone is heading to Blogworld 2008 anyway. I could list what this blog is about, what I want to accomplish. Hey that’s not bad. Maybe I should do it in list form. People do like lists.

So in no particular order, I give you the goals, hopes, and dreams I want for New Media Chatter:

-For all of us to learn more about this space called New Media. ( I plan on learning from you too!)

-To pass on the tools needed for people to learn how to brand themselves in this new age of social media

-I want to start discussions and conversations about New Media, make us all think.

- To point you to people, websites and events where you can learn more and network with.

-A place where you can come to get the latest trends in the industry.

I hope this is not to deep or mushy for the first post. Heck, I hope I didn’t scare you off, I want you to subscribe to this blog!

So look at that, the first post is over. Great.. now we can get down to business and starting talking about New Media.
